Purpose of testing

Bed slats carry repeated bending loads in service, so their bending strength and stiffness are the key mechanical properties to confirm. This note describes testing according to EN 310, the standard method for determining the modulus of elasticity in bending and bending strength of wood-based panels and laminated products.

The purpose is to verify repeatable production performance, not only a single sample. A single favourable result does not confirm that an entire production run will perform consistently.

Mechanical requirements

For this project the following minimum requirements apply to birch bed slats:

  • MOR (bending strength): minimum 150 N/mm²
  • Target average MOR: about 160 N/mm² or higher
  • MOE (modulus of elasticity): minimum 15,000 N/mm²

Project test setup

For the 12 mm development samples discussed for this project, the test specimen setup used the following dimensions. These are the project test parameters, not a universal rule:

  • Specimen width: 68 mm (the customer-required product width for this project)
  • Span: 240 mm
  • Specimen length: approximately 290 mm
Note on width: 68 mm is the actual product width required by the customer for this project. It is not implied to be the generic EN 310 standard width.

Factors reviewed for production validation

Because the goal is repeatable performance across a production run, validation considers the factors that influence bending behaviour:

  • Layer structure — number, thickness and orientation of veneer layers
  • Veneer thickness — contribution of each ply to overall stiffness
  • Raw-material density — density of the birch veneer used
  • Glue system — adhesive type and bond integrity between layers
  • Pressing conditions — pressure, temperature and pressing cycle
  • Finished thickness — final thickness and its consistency

What this note does not claim

This page is a method and requirements reference. It does not publish any private laboratory result, does not claim final certification, and does not state that this product is mass-production approved. Any dated, confirmed result will be published separately where evidenced and approved for release.
