Custom Blockboard Development
Development of multi-construction blockboard with Pine FJ cores and HDF, EV and Fromager surfaces.
Project Overview
This project required the development of several blockboard constructions using Pine finger-jointed cores and different surface materials. Samples and trial production were used to evaluate thickness, flatness, grain direction, bonding and packing requirements.
Project Images
Images are selected from actual production, inspection, packing or shipment records.

Pine FJ core blockboard with HDF face

EV-faced blockboard — engineered veneer sample

EV-faced blockboard — finished panel

Fromager panel — lightweight hardwood surface

Fromager FJ panel — interior door application

Fromager panel — clean, even grain surface
Key Development Areas
Construction Types
Three-layer (face/core/back) and five-layer constructions evaluated. Each construction affects panel stability, weight and surface flatness.
Grain Direction
Longitudinal and transversal grain options tested. Grain direction influences panel behaviour during environmental changes.
Thickness Calibration
Calibrated thickness with consistent tolerance across the full panel. Calibration after pressing important for consistent fitting.
Surface Options
HDF, Fromager and EV surfaces tested on the same Pine FJ core. Each requires different glue, pressing and finishing parameters.
Packing Protection
Surface-sensitive faces require protective interleaf and reinforced corners. Format adjusted based on panel dimensions.
Continuous Improvement
Construction, veneer direction and tolerance confirmed before production. Project feedback used to improve process control.
